Technology Management for Teachers

technology management tips for teachers

About this Page

Technology Management can be a struggle for some teachers. This section is dedicate to help you with that. It's best practice to start the year with strong technology management expectations, but don't be afraid to start now. You can still effectively begin a new classroom procedure in the middle of the year.

💡Teacher Tips: You will want to ensure that you explicitly teacher your expectations to your students. Take time to practice the routines and expectations. When students struggle, pause and again teach your expectations. If you are consistent with your expectations, students will be more successful in meeting those expectations.

Don't have time to make everything you need? Don't worry, I have a Device Starter Kit you can purchase if you want. Click HERE!

If you don't have a program to manage computers, these ideas and tips will serve you well as you integrate technology.

Teacher Expectations

As the teacher, you want to have clearly communicated expectations for your classroom technology. You want students to know how you expect them to treat the physical devices as well as how they will interact with technology in your class when doing online work.

Contracts: Take time to either build a classroom contract which you can create with your students, or develop a written contract they can keep in their notebooks throughout the year. These serve as great references to hold students accountable to your expectations throughout the entire year.

Routines & Procedures: Students need to know when they are allowed to get devices in your room, where and how to retrieve them, which device they get and so much more. Have procedures in place for them. I love the technology traffic light so they know if they should grab it right away, wait until instruction, or red for no devices that day.

Rules: Have clear rules that can be enforced with logical consequences mapped out for your students.

💡 Teacher Tip: Don't skip the expectations, take time to set up systems for your technology, it will serve you well in the long run.

Student Tech Tips

Help set your students up with success, view these 💡technology tips for students. Use them with your student learners tomorrow.

  • Organize your physical work space, remove backpacks, notebooks you don't need, water bottles, etc.
  • Organize your digital work space, remove tabs you will not be using for the activity.
  • Use pinning and grouping tabs to prevent from unnecessarily closing out of tabs you need.
  • Bookmark important tabs you want your students to reference weekly or daily. (take time to clean these up too, you don't want 8th graders with 1st grade bookmarks)

💡Teaching Tips for the Teacher

  • Teaching Strategy: When you are instructing students and using devices, try using my 45 degrees tip! Ask students to close their device half way (45*) you can even have them turn them backwards. This way, hands are off the keyboard and eyes are off the screen, so you can give instructions.
  • Blended Learning: Use a mix of technology learning with non technology strategies. Allow them to use digital resources, with a blend of hands on learning or discourse, so it's not all technology all the time.
  • Collaborative Learning: Use programs like Google and Padlet to allow students a collaborative digital space. Great for project work and peer review.
